5 Techniques to better your Bowling from US Bowler.com

Have an approach befitting your individual style

Every bowler has their own pace, and athletes bowl best when their style and approach are in sync with that pace. People who move quickly need a faster approach and an arm swing that moves quickly, so that their feet can move quickly as well. Conversely, a more laid-back bowler needs a longer swing, which allows them to bowl at a more comfortable pace. It's all about matching the arm swing to the footwork. Most bowlers would be better served by quickening their pace; the more time you spend thinking, the more your movements become more mechanical and less free-flowing.

Maintain your balance from the beginning to the end of your approach

The best stance is one in which the knees are slightly flexed and the upper body is slightly forward. If you observe the pros, you'll notice they start in an athletic position and their upper torso doesn't move forward and back during their approach. Bowlers who fall off balance use too much force, which allows their swing to move away from their body, causing them to lean toward their ball side when they deliver the ball.

Always use properly fitting equipment

Using ill-fitting equipment can seriously impact your game. For instance, a thumbhole pitched with too much reverse or drilled too large can cause bowlers to squeeze the ball. A large callous on the top joint of the thumb is a sure sign that a bowler is squeezing to hold on to the ball.

Use light grip pressure in the bowling ball to allow for a free flowing armswing

Light grip pressure allows for a faster, longer swing with much less tension. To ensure a light grip, the fit of your ball has to be correct. Many bowlers use tape to adjust the fit, putting tape in the thumbhole if their thumb is slipping, and taking some out if their thumb has swelled.

Keep your swing and bowling ball underneath your bowling shoulder at release to allow for optimal accuracy and leverage

If your arm swing drifts away from your body or behind you in the back swing, your accuracy will decrease. Your ball placement into the swing will be off or you'll find yourself redirecting the ball in the down swing. Concentrating on these five points and emulating the pros is the perfect way to tune up your game. USBC Bronze, Silver and Gold coaches all are trained to help you develop the timing and approach that fits your body style, flexibility and personality. The best way to work on these aspects of your game is to work with a USBC certified coach. Find a coach that can video tape you and show you your approach. Also, be sure to visit your local IBPSIA Certified Pro shop operator to make sure your equipment fits properly.
